Well, that was fun. We just lost all front end connectivity here for about 45 minutes. Gave me a nice long break though 🙂

Bah!
this weekend sucked. Friday night I was stuck at work till like 7:30 working on a problem caused by another program that I do not work with. We thought everything was cool, another dept. was running some scripts to automate shutting down the proccess on all the machines, so we were told we could leave. As I am walking out the door, my supervisor stops me and says the director wants us all down in the NOC for something. I was like “fuck that, I’m going home. If he has a problem, tell him to call me.” So I drive back to Va., stop by the pet store, and get back in my car. My cell rings, It’s my manager. He’s like “Dan.. where are you?” I’m like “just about to my house.” He says “you need to come back to work” I ask “why?” he tells me that he needs someone to write scripts, I tell him that I am not a programmer, and would not be of help. His answer, “you’ll learn it then.” I tell him that’s not a good answer, and I am not driving all the way back up there to try and deal with a program that I have never even seen, let alone done admin work on. So he get’s that god complex, and says “so you’re telling me that you are refusing to come in?” I say yes (keep in mind, it’s 8:00 Friday night, I get off work at 5:30). So he’s like “you’re putting me in a bad position here” I say “I’m not putting you anywhere.” so he’s like “fine. This is not over. Have a good weekend.” and hangs up. Why must I put up with this stupid crap? I’m sure I get to have a little meeting with him and the director today, about me not being a team player or some shit. Joy!
Weekends just aren’t long enough anymore. I had a good weekend, but got nothing done that I wanted too. We went to see the oriole’s get their asses handed to them on Friday. Aside from them sucking so badly, we still had a good time.
I slept till three on Saturday, since I had a total of like 10 hours of sleep all week. Steph and I went out to CPK, then did some shopping, and headed over to a friends place for a party. I was going to attempt round three against the firewall afterwards, but I had zero patience to deal with it, so I decided to just say forget about it, till this week.
Sunday, we went out to look at the new house, itz looking awesome. They have finished the bricks on the front, and we should be ready to do the pre-drywall inspection this week. If they keep on schedule, we should be ready to move in around the first or second week of November.
After the house, we met up with some friends and headed out to the zoo. Coming from that area, I had no idea how to get there, and apparently neither did anyone else in the car, so we wandered around the various ghettoz of dc until we finally stopped and got a map. The zoo is always fun, especially with Steph. The highlight of our trip was Steph saying wouldn’t it be funny if they started doing it. I guess the male took it as a dare, cuz he walked up to the female, lifted her tail, said this will do, and mounted her like a $2 whore.
After the zoo, we all headed back out to Va, and met up at the Macaroni Grill for dinner. Our server sucked, as they do about every other time we go. The food was good though, and itz always good going out with friends.
Believe it or not, I actually got even less sleep than the night before. I was up workin on the firewall again, had everything workin great, then i noticed that Steph’z computer had locked up. So I was like, okay, this would be a good opportunity to change her over to the internal address. So I reboot her, put the new ip on it, the firewall saw her, Icould see her, but I couldnt ping out from her box. I am completely boggled, the firewall says everythingz okay, i could see her from an external address and all. At this point, it was gettin real late, so I was like fuck it, I’ll put her back on the external IP, and deal with her machine tomorrow. So I switched her IP back, and tried to ping the gateway, with no love. I was completely at a loss, and figured it hadta be an ARP issue, but by this time it was around 4am and i hadta be up in less than 3 hourz, so i brought down the firewall, and dumped everything back on to the external net. I then tried to ping out from her machine again, once again no love. Juzt for shitz and gigglez, I tried to connect her cam program to the server, and it worked! Her stupid fucking net utility iz broke ass! So chances are it was fine behind the firewall. I guess I’ll find out this weekend. GRRRR
I am surprisingly awake for only getting 3 hourz of sleep last night, or this morning I should say. I stayed up way to late working on the firewall. I ran into a few problems with ARP, and ended up having to setup proxy ARP. I should hopefully have everything working tonight. Sorry for any latency you may have been/Will be experiencing on the web server.
Bah!
Back to work today. I did not miss my office. Of course someone stole my laptop IP while I was gone, so the first thing I got to do was play the ping for open IP game. Then I find out that one of my production servers went down on Saturday, and our NOC didnt bother to escalate it. Luckily its only the secondary server, but if that primary went down, they woulda been fux0red. Oh well, their problem I guess. Time to go get some chili.
Got both hard drivez reformatted and partitioned in the web server. I don’t know that you will notice anything client-side, it was done mainly to re-allocate disk space from old partitions to give more to the ones that were starting to hurt. I also setup a caching nameserver last night. Now I just need to take the time to model our firewall, since the server is built and ready to go. Time to go get some food.
Oh btw…
For those of you that are regualr visitors to either half-asleep.com or stvlive.com, I apologize for downtime over the past two days. I have been making some adjustments to the www server, to make things run more efficiently. I will be bringing the server down again tonight for a while, to do some backups, and repartition the second drive.
Ugh!
My body is feeling the pressure of the lack of sleep, and excess stress. I felt like my heart was going to explode when I was coming into work.
For some reason, my damn NT Domain login at work keeps getting locked. It’s pissing me off. Of course IS has no idea what the problem is, so I juzt keep calling them to unlock it. I disconnected all of my network shares and rebooted, hopefully that will have done the trick. But hey,.. this is microshaft, nothing surprises me.
Okay, you ever do something and forget to do one simple thing, and it completely hozez the whole thing? I do, I do! Last night I was repartitioning some space on the www server. This should be a relatively simple task since I was completely wiping out a 5g partition, then creating new partitions on it to move existing ones to.
So I unmount the partition, use fdisk, wipe out the existing partition, and create 3 new ones. Then rebooted (this would be where I fucked up). I forgot to format the partitions, so when linux is booting up, fsck starts spewing out the errors. Now had I realized right away what I had forgotten, this would have been easily recoverable. But I did not.
I look in fdisk, and see that there are a bunch of errors on the partitions, one of which was (what I though) an old partition that should have been removed. So I hit “d” fdisk says pick a partition (1-10) I hit “5” then “w” to save the table, then exit out of fdisk. It is now that I realize that I had forgotten to format before, so I format my 3 new partitions, and reboot.
Linux starts booting, and fsck gives me another error about a partition that should have been “swap”. I go into fstab and realize that something got fucked up some how, and hda7 and hda8 some how switched. I fixed this and rebooted.
Linux boots fine this time. I log in, and type in an alias that I use, and get an error. I immediately knew what happened. /home was gone! somehow, the partitions had all gotten switched around, and /home ended up getting formatted. DOH!
Luckily, unless my users were doing so without my knowledge, there was nothing terribly important on this partition. I lost a lot of misc. stuff that I kept in my home dir, but nothing I can’t live without. Thank god /www /usr & /var are all on another disk.
Oh well, shit happens! This is how I learn all the stuff I know. Make a dreadful mistake, don’t ever do it again.
